Sue is a Visual Artist and leads workshops here in the U.K. and Internationally. Nature is a big inspiration to Sue's work evoking a sense of wonder and curiosity of the changing world.

" I love contrasts, something stark with something warm and soft together creating a composition. I love the quiet among the sounds of water, a crunch under foot, I love the expanse from walking in nature, the opportunity to let your thoughts unfold.

I love to observe life in a city, to sit back and watch, I love seeing nature growing in the cracks of a city, I love observing reflections in windows often with nature peeking from trees reflected in the glass, I love architecture, I love the balance in a city-scape, I love graffiti to see where others have touched the city.

I love being in nature and take inspiration from walks as often as possible, with photography I love capturing forms and texture, signs of the seasons, often from obscure view points showing new perspectives, a way to think and see differently.

Handmade Parade

Handmade Parade

Sue Walpole is a Visual Artist who has over 20 years in the creative arts and community arts industry. She is one of the lead artist for Handmade Parade and has worked in the company for over 10 years.

"Becoming part of the handmade Parade team has enabled me so much, as Artist, Project Manager and artistic producer /director of many projects I have grown in directions I never imagined. We lead a fantastic parade each Summer in Hebden Bridge and each Winter in Todmorden, from there we enable other communities to do the same as well as add to existing community events and parades. As Handmade Artist I create large scale artworks, engage in community programes, deliver Masterclasses and take on commissions, I have also been fortunate to be involved in some spectacular International projects previously mentioned. As project Manager I organise and enable community leaders to actualise their dreams of community cohesion and well-being with their local community bringing everyone together."

“When you first see the parade all come together it takes your breath away. To see all the ideas there larger than life with all the people together who have made it possible, it’s just magical.”

Enjoying the Creative Process

"For my artwork commissions, I draw inspiration from nature, from relevant artists, illustrative sketches, anything I can find that relates to the subject to inspire and get my own ideas flowing. I'll make rough sketches and follow up things I like, that feel work for thebrief. All along I’m looking also at the technical elements, what I'll need for the internal structure, what lighting will the work use, what materials will work, how to create surface decoration, how to bring it alive. I'll look at which parts can have movement, and how to make that happen and to make them strong.

From there I'll make a scale drawing, then I'll get things started with some live sketches with willow to start everything flowing before diving in to create the piece. "
